Quick answers about NAV, SIPs, fund plans and how rankings work.
NAV (Net Asset Value) is the per-unit price of a mutual fund: total assets minus liabilities, divided by the number of units outstanding. It is declared by the fund house every business day, and you buy or sell units at the applicable NAV.
Funds are ranked by their return over 1, 3 or 5 years, calculated from the scheme’s own NAV history. Returns up to 1 year are absolute; for 3 and 5 years they are annualised (CAGR). Only active schemes with enough history are considered. Past performance is not a guarantee of future returns.
A SIP invests a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals, usually every month. Because you buy more units when prices are low and fewer when they are high, your average purchase cost is smoothed out over market ups and downs, and investing becomes a disciplined habit.
The minimum SIP amount depends on the scheme. Many mutual funds allow SIPs from as little as ₹100 to ₹500 per month. Check the scheme’s details or use the SIP calculator on this page to see what a small monthly amount can grow into.
Direct plans have no distributor commission, so their expense ratio is lower and their NAV is typically higher than the Regular plan of the same scheme. Both plans invest in the same portfolio.
In the Growth option, profits are reinvested and compound within the NAV. In the IDCW (Income Distribution cum Capital Withdrawal, formerly Dividend) option, part of the profits may be paid out periodically, which reduces the NAV by the amount distributed.
